From an Unknown Bio-Based Fabric to a Fully Bio-Based Collection

Turning an unfamiliar bio-based reference fabric into a new material platform for performance sportswear.

01 Starting With One Reference Garment

Velquena came to HuiYu with a reference running legging and a clear material direction: bio-based fabric.

However, the information available about the fabric was limited.

The garment did not clearly identify the exact polymer composition, leaving an important question before development could begin:

What was the material actually made from?

Understanding the original fabric was important because the client wanted to develop a comparable material and eventually build a broader collection around it.

02 Investigating the Material Composition

Based on the fabric’s hand feel and performance characteristics, the material appeared to be related to a polyamide/elastane construction, but the exact type of polyamide still needed to be verified.

HuiYu worked with a university laboratory to conduct elemental analysis and chemical dissolution testing.

The testing helped distinguish the fiber composition and investigate the underlying polymer structure.

The analysis identified PA510 as the main polyamide component, giving the development team a clearer technical basis for the next stage.

03 From Material Identification to Fabric Development

Once the main polymer was identified, the next challenge was to develop a new fabric rather than simply reproduce the original garment.

HuiYu developed a fully bio-based fabric solution, using bio-based materials for both the main polyamide component and elastane.

The development needed to balance several product requirements:

This turned the original reference garment into a starting point for a new material solution.

04 From One Running Legging to a Complete Collection

The project did not stop with reproducing one running style.

Once the fabric direction had been established, HuiYu and the client extended the material into a broader performance collection.

The development expanded into:

Fitness & Training

This allowed the client to use the material concept across different activities while maintaining a consistent product and material direction.

05 Building a Material Platform

The value of the project was not simply identifying an unfamiliar fabric.

The development created a clearer path from material investigation to product development.

A single reference garment provided the starting point. Laboratory analysis helped identify the underlying material, and that information then guided the development of a new bio-based fabric.
